Sometimes you might notice small areas where your sofa has turned pink. Pinking can occur when the dyes used by the manufacturer are sensitive to a change in pH and has caused an indicator dye within the fabric to change its colour. This could be a pre-existing condition where you may have spilled a drink or attempted a D.I.Y clean, or from just prolonged body contact on certain areas. Pinking would suggest that that the fabric is sensitive to acidity.
This tends to mainly happen on sofas with a cotton content but has been seen on sofas with viscose content also.
How To Correct Pinking
The best way to achieve this is to make a mixture using bicarbonate of soda (not baking powder). The bicarbonate of soda should cancel out the imbalance in the pH which has caused the indicator dye present to turn pink in the fabric. The original colour will gradually return as the material dries out. Correction can happen immediately or may not fully disappear until the fabric is bone dry. One heaped teaspoon to 500ml warm water, applied by a misting sprayer, is usually enough to correct pinking, however you may need to increase the dose if the pinking is severe.
